Why does it usually take a crisis for people to look at alternatives to their lifestyles?
More and more people are realizing that one of the main causes of our planet’s demise is our relentless use of energy. Energy is an integral part of human life. We cannot live without it; our very existence depends on it. However, through our use of it, we have managed to pollute our waters and land so severely that in some cases, the damaging effects cannot be reversed. We are draining the earth’s natural resources, leaving little for future generations.
We have been knowingly affecting the earth’s environment for centuries; however some of the first real contributions to its destruction began after WWII with the effects of atomic testing. Since then, society has introduced many other polluting energy resources and the list continues to grow today. Unfortunately, many of us hadn’t put much thought into the problems we were causing until it began affecting out pocketbooks.
Most of us, until the recent economic recession triggered by rising fuel and energy costs, have never considered making changes in our lives to contribute to the well-being of our earth. We often feel that the media distorts the facts, making things sound worse than they are; or we assume that “someone else will handle the problem.”
Well, the truth is that we are entering crisis mode, and it’s time for our “traditional” lifestyles to evolve into more eco-friendly living choices. No one can solve the environmental issues on their own, but everyone needs to start doing their part to help save energy. And by the way, saving energy also helps save you money – so for anyone who wants to know what’s in it for me, the answer is clear!
It is crucial that we find alternate energy resources that are renewable and will not harm the environment. Like I said, we all use energy, we all need it, we all waste it, and the time is come for us to understand the consequences of losing it. It’s time to make some changes!
